REDISCOVERING THE PAST: 50 YEARS OF FIJI RED CROSS SOCIETY’S JOURNEY
In a corner of our Fiji Red Cross Society’s office, a treasure trove of old photographs lies waiting to be rediscovered. These photographs, spanning decades, capture the essence of our organization’s journey, revealing glimpses of the past that continue to shape our work today.
As the Director General, it’s been a delightful experience to dive into these visual archives and explore the rich history of the Fiji Red Cross Society. What strikes me the most is the remarkable continuity and evolution of our mission over the years, from the 1970s to the present day.
Some of the photographs I stumbled upon showcase a spirited bed race event. Smiles, laughter, and camaraderie fill the frame as participants push their beds with zeal and determination. While I may not know all the faces in the photo, there’s a sense of connection to the enthusiasm and dedication that has been a hallmark of our organization’s volunteers and supporters.
Moving forward to the 1990s, another photograph captures a vibrant moment in the form of a fashion show. What’s fascinating is that some well-known names in the world of art and entertainment in Fiji graced our runway back then. It’s a testament to the broad appeal and influence of Fiji Red Cross Society’s events, transcending boundaries and bringing together people from various walks of life.
Yet, it’s a specific photograph that has truly captivated my attention. In this image, two ladies and a gentleman proudly carry bags branded with the words “Family Planning Kit.” A stark reminder of how the landscape of healthcare and health awareness has evolved in Fiji over the last half-century.
From Family Planning kits and blood services equipment to Community-Based Surveillance and crucial awareness campaigns on non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and Community First Aid, our organization has adapted and expanded its programs to meet the changing health needs of our communities. The challenges we face today may differ from those of the past, but the enduring commitment to improving the well-being of Fijians remains unchanged.
Looking at these photographs, I am filled with gratitude for the dedicated individuals who have played a pivotal role in shaping the Fiji Red Cross Society. Their tireless efforts, innovation, and compassion have paved the way for our continued success.
As we move forward, we carry with us the lessons and inspiration from our history. The times may be changing, but our unwavering commitment to serving our communities remains as strong as ever. These photographs serve as a reminder that our work today is built upon the enduring legacy of those who came before us.
In the spirit of honouring our history, we look ahead with enthusiasm and determination, knowing that we have the privilege and responsibility to carry forward the mission of the Fiji Red Cross Society for generations to come.
We extend a warm invitation to all individuals to step forward and generously share their cherished memories and stories related to the Red Cross. As we draw nearer to the official celebration of our 50th Anniversary, we are preparing a visual journey through the past five decades, capturing significant moments in pictures.
Your invaluable memories and stories hold a special place in our hearts, and we eagerly anticipate featuring them alongside this remarkable journey.
Vinaka,
DIRECTOR GENERAL
