WORLD TSUNAMI DAY 2023
In the pursuit of creating safer and more resilient communities, collaboration stands as a fundamental pillar. The Fiji Red Cross Society, recognizing the critical role of partnerships, has actively engaged with key stakeholders, particularly governments, to enhance tsunami awareness and response efforts. Emphasizing their community-centric approach, we have been privileged to participate in significant events such as the World Tsunami Day celebrations at Shangri-La in Sigatoka.
We recognise that collaboration with governmental bodies, especially the Ministry of Lands and Mineral Resources will be instrumental in amplifying our impact on tsunami awareness and response. By joining forces with the government, we can access valuable resources, infrastructure, and expertise. Together, we can create tailored strategies that address the unique challenges faced by communities vulnerable to tsunamis.
The invitation to participate in the World Tsunami Day celebrations at Shangri-La in Sigatoka stands as a testament to the Red Cross’s commitment to community-based initiatives. World Tsunami Day serves as a global platform, uniting nations, organizations, and individuals in their collective efforts to raise awareness about tsunamis and promote disaster preparedness. Being a part of these celebrations not only highlights the Red Cross’s dedication but also provides an opportunity to share knowledge, engage with communities, and foster a sense of unity in the face of potential disasters.
Present at the event was Fiji Red Cross Society Director General, Ms Ragigia Dawai. She shared the importance of collaboration with partners in the space;
“An important start is to acknowledge the importance of collaboration with partners like the Government. Through our active involvement in events like the World Tsunami Day celebrations, the Fiji Red Cross Society reinforces the significance of unity, knowledge sharing, and community engagement in the realm of disaster preparedness. Together, we can pave the way for a future where communities are not just survivors but thriving examples of resilience and strength”
One of our distinctive strengths, at the Red Cross, lies in our community-based approach. By actively involving local communities in awareness programs and response initiatives, we ensure that the knowledge imparted is culturally sensitive, accessible, and practical. Through collaborative efforts with Government, the Red Cross can extend its reach, making a significant impact on vulnerable communities and enhancing their resilience in the face of tsunamis.
As we continue to collaborate with key partners, including Government, the future of tsunami awareness and response appears promising. By leveraging collective expertise, resources, and community engagement,we aim to create a world where every individual is well-informed, prepared, and empowered to face the challenges posed by tsunamis and other disasters.
