YOUTH TALANOA EVENT AIMS TO TACKLE HIV AND DRUG ABUSE CRISIS IN FIJI
Suva, Fiji – The Fiji Red Cross Society (FRCS) proudly announces the successful conclusion
of its inaugural Youth Talanoa Event, held on Monday 12 August 2024 at the Novotel Suva,
Lami Bay. This one-day gathering of Fiji Red Cross Youth Volunteers addressed the pressing
national issues of HIV and drug abuse through engaging discussions and interactive sessions
with key stakeholders.
The Fiji Red Cross Society, committed to safeguarding the well-being and resilience of Fiji’s
communities, especially during crises, designed this event as a proactive response to the
escalating challenges posed by HIV and drug use among the youth population. The Youth
Talanoa Event effectively bridged gaps in awareness, dialogue, and support by providing a
platform for education, conversation, and resource sharing.
Fiji is grappling with a significant rise in HIV prevalence and drug use among its youth, with
alarming statistics showing an increase in cases. The youngest affected is below the age of
10, highlighting the urgency of the situation. In recent years, the number of drug-related
offenses among young people has surged, and HIV cases among Fijian youth have more than
doubled, exacerbated by a lack of awareness, stigma, and inadequate support structures.
The event’s objectives were to disseminate comprehensive information on HIV and drug use
to enhance awareness, foster an environment conducive to open discussions and shared
experiences, facilitate access to information, support services, and resources, inspire active
participation in addressing community health issues, and forge alliances with stakeholders
and community leaders to sustain efforts.
The event achieved significant outcomes, including increased awareness among youth
volunteers regarding HIV and drug-related issues, reduced stigma through open dialogues,
strengthened support networks through enhanced collaboration among youth, community
leaders, and support organizations, youth empowerment with motivated individuals taking
proactive roles in tackling health challenges, and increased community engagement through
the formation of a youth committee to ensure ongoing dialogue and support.
Interactive panel discussions and breakout sessions focused on drug awareness and HIV
prevention, featuring esteemed speakers from Youth & Sports, Police, Social Welfare, Ministry
of Health, and other relevant authorities. Special guests included Ratu Inosi Rayawa and
representatives from law enforcement agencies. The morning session centred on drug
awareness, while the afternoon session addressed HIV awareness with expert insights and
testimonies from affected individuals.
Ms. Ragigia Dawai, Director General of the Fiji Red Cross Society, commented on the success
of the event: “The Youth Talanoa Event was a vital initiative that empowered our
young volunteers to take an active role in addressing critical health issues in
our communities. By fostering open dialogue and providing essential
resources, we have created a supportive environment where youth can thrive
and contribute to a healthier, more resilient Fiji.”
The Youth Talanoa Event shows Fiji Red Cross Society’s commitment to empowering youth
and fostering resilient communities through informed dialogue and proactive engagement.
This initiative aligns with the Fiji Red Cross Society’s strategic goals to promote health, safety,
and dignity among all Fijians.
