A Volunteer’s Journey: A Story of Inspiration

December 7, 2024

Read the inspiring speech from our esteemed Chief Guest. Fellow volunteer and Fiji Red Cross Society Board member, Ms Risita Devi.

Muju Cola Vinaka,

It is a great privilege to stand before you this afternoon as we come together to celebrate International Volunteer Day under the theme “Honoring the Hearts of Humanity in the Community.” This theme resonates deeply with me, as it captures the very essence of volunteering—the selfless act of giving from the heart to uplift others and strengthen our communities.

My own journey as a volunteer began in 2007, and I am humbled to share my story with you today, hoping it inspires and empowers you to embrace the incredible power of volunteerism.

Back in 2007, I registered with FRCS TAVUA Branch and I also started as a community worker, driven by a simple but powerful desire to make a difference. Over time, I found myself drawn to initiatives that aligned with my values and passions. My work with the Sai Prema Foundation was particularly fulfilling, as it allowed me to contribute to projects that brought love, compassion, and tangible support to those in need. Likewise, my time as a volunteer with the Red Cross Tavua branch taught me resilience, teamwork, and the importance of community spirit in times of crisis.

Each of these experiences shaped me, helping me grow not only as a volunteer but as an individual. They taught me that volunteering is not just about giving; it is about receiving lessons, friendships, and the joy that comes from knowing you’ve touched someone’s life.

A key milestone in my journey was being selected to serve as a national board member after being the President of my branch. This role has been both a tremendous responsibility and an opportunity to advocate for the incredible contributions of volunteers across our country. I firmly believe that at the heart of every thriving community lies the dedication of volunteers—people who work quietly and tirelessly to build a brighter future for all.

At this juncture, I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to the National Society for believing in me and sending me to Bangkok for the Women in Leadership training in August. This experience was transformative, as it equipped me with valuable skills and insights to lead with compassion, inclusivity, and purpose. It reinforced my belief that leadership is not about authority but about empowering others and amplifying their voices.

To my fellow volunteers and everyone gathered here today: you are the true heroes. Whether you are just beginning your journey or have been serving for years, your efforts embody the very theme of today’s celebration—Honoring the Hearts of Humanity in the Community. Your work doesn’t go unnoticed, its impact is profound and far-reaching.

I hope my journey serves as a reminder that volunteering is not just an act—it is a way of life. It is about believing in the power of humanity, stepping up when there is a need, and giving of yourself without expecting anything in return.

As we celebrate this special day, let us also look forward, recommitting ourselves to building stronger, more compassionate communities. Let us continue to inspire one another, recognizing that every act of kindness, no matter how small, contributes to a better world.

Thank you for giving me this opportunity to share my story. May we all carry forward the spirit of volunteerism with pride, love, and dedication.

Vinaka.
