A United Voice for the Pacific

October 28, 2024

The Pacific Red Cross Red Crescent took a powerful stance at the 2024 Council of Delegates. Our National President, Sala Toganivalu-Lesuma, delivered a compelling statement based on the report on the work of the Standing Commission, on behalf of the 14 Pacific National Societies.

“Thank you Chair for the opportunity to deliver this intervention on behalf of the 14 National Societies of the Pacific Sub-Region.

We extend our sincere gratitude to the Standing Commission for their diligent work over the past four years and warmly welcome the comprehensive report on their work. The Commission’s efforts in advancing Movement coordination and fostering unified approaches across our Movement and with States have been invaluable.

We particularly commend the Commission’s work on the Movement Policy Framework initiative. This forward-looking endeavor will undoubtedly benefit National Societies in the years to come, enhancing our collective ability to respond effectively to humanitarian challenges.

The Pacific Sub-Region would like to recognize the outstanding contributions of the outgoing members of the Standing Commission. We especially acknowledge Fine Tu’itupou-Arnold, who has been an exceptional advocate for our region. Her tireless efforts to promote Movement coordination and raise the profile of the Pacific within the broader Red Cross and Red Crescent family have been truly remarkable.

We also express our deep appreciation to the Standing Commission for their meticulous preparation of these Statutory Meetings, including the 34th International Conference which has established commissions and resolutions addressing critical issues which are of utmost importance to us all and the role we play in safeguarding principled and localized humanitarian action.

Finally, we look forward to welcoming new members of the Standing Commission who can also represent their regions and whose knowledge and experience of diverse parts of the Movement will benefit us all – increasing our  capacity to serve those in need.

Vinaka vakalevu and Thank you.”
