FIJI IN FINAL TOP 40 UNDER 40 GLOBAL CHALLENGE

Suva, Sunday, 29th January 2023 – Fiji has made the final Top 40 under 40 innovation challenge. National Societies from around the globe shared their humanitarian technology project for the first-ever Global Red Cross Red Crescent Youth Tech Entrepreneur Award.

Red Crescent National Societies have been applying diverse technologies to address humanitarian challenges with the Top 40 under 40 Humanitarian Tech Entrepreneur of the Year Award focused on digital and technology skills and innovation in young leaders within the IFRC.

Making it to the Top 40 is Eric Wong, the IT officer at Fiji Red Cross Society for the work he is currently doing in the digitisation of the Volunteer Management System.

Some of the challenges faced by Fiji Red Cross Society is around the proper collection, collation & recording of volunteer data. The onboarding details of a volunteer is still being done manually and this creates a great deal of challenges including discrepancies in volunteer details. Digitising the Volunteer Management System will be extremely helpful in make existing structures more effective and developing new formats for volunteer work. It will also strengthen Volunteer retention.

Eric Wong has been with the Society for more than 5 years, a Levuka-born, Eric comes from a family of long serving volunteers.

Five finalists from the TOP 40 will attend the Connect Technology Conference in Rwanda, and a sixth will be selected based on YouTube video view.

Ragigia Dawai, Director General of Fiji Red Cross says, ‘Eric has done exceptionally well to be recognized amongst 192 member Societies across the World. We know Eric will keep pushing the boundaries of technology and changing the world.’
